Chances are if you're coaching Middle School and High School athletes you have a huge bridge in aerobic capacity and hard skills. Along with those differneces there is most likely a large gap in equpment as well.
Cycling loves to talk about metrics: Heart Rate, Lactate Threshold, FTP, Power.... the list goes on ad nauseum. |
For the athletes who do not have access to those gadgets, but are still dedicated to training, please click the link below to learn more about training with rate of perceived exertion (RPE).
Pay specific attention to the duration (think event time) the athlete can maintain that level of exertion. Not that the athlete will not dip into other zones during the race, but this can serve as a guide. |
Most of the athletes we encounter will never be at a professional level, and many have no inclicnation to chase it that far. They are not participating in the sport for the future, but rather, the now.
"How can I have fun today? " (I often remind athletes I work with, you do not have to be good at something to have fun doing it... have you ever heard Oliver Tree's voice?) |
Leading by example and demonstrating how much fun you can have when you put your heart into something will help encourage these athletes to chase it themselves. My goal as a coach is to unlock some of their potential, overcome some challenges, and celebrate effort & progress. My hope is that some of these lessons bleed over into the athlete's daily life, and they become more self confident.
