REEVE McNAMARA NOLS Marketing Manager Approach
Priorities Journey 6 Months Measurement Why Me
Reeve McNamara · Marketing Manager Approach

Turn the mission into the moment someone says, “I can see myself there.”

A six-month approach to grow qualified demand, improve the path to enrollment, and tell the NOLS story with the same clarity, confidence, and purpose NOLS brings to the field.

Built around NOLS’ vision: elevate the leader in everyone.
Enrollment growthIntegrated campaignsAnalytics + testingAuthentic field stories
A concise candidate strategy, designed to be skimmed first and explored second.
My thesis

NOLS does not need to make wilderness education more exciting. The experience already is. Marketing’s job is to make the value more legible, the pathways easier to navigate, and the decision easier to make.

Strategy at a glance: make NOLS easier to discover, understand, trust, and choose.
01 · DemandReach the right prospective student earlier.
02 · StoryTurn field experience into compelling proof.
03 · ConversionRemove friction between interest and enrollment.
04 · LearningUse data and testing to improve every cycle.
The approach

Marketing should work like a NOLS course.

Start with a clear objective. Prepare carefully. Learn by doing. Read the environment. Adjust from evidence. Keep moving toward the outcome.

For marketing, the outcome is not simply reach. It is helping the right person move from curiosity to confidence to enrollment.
Priority 01

Find the right student earlier.

Build sharper audience and intent signals across search, paid, content, partnerships, social, and email so NOLS reaches people when the idea of an expedition, semester, certification, or leadership experience first becomes relevant.

↗
Priority 02

Make the value unmistakable.

Translate programs into the outcomes prospective students are actually choosing: capability, confidence, certification, leadership, community, challenge, and a different sense of what they can do.

↗
Priority 03

Reduce friction to enrollment.

Use analytics, user behavior, landing-page testing, CRM follow-up, and clear calls to action to make the next step obvious, then measure which improvements actually change enrollment behavior.

↗
The enrollment journey

One connected system, not a collection of channels.

Every touchpoint should answer the next question a prospective student is asking. Marketing becomes more effective when SEO, paid media, content, email, website UX, and storytelling operate as one journey.

01
Discover

“Is there something here for me?”

Search, paid campaigns, organic social, partnerships, referrals, alumni, and relevant editorial content.

02
Understand

“What would I actually gain?”

Clear program positioning, course comparison, outcomes, expectations, FAQs, and audience-specific landing pages.

03
Trust

“Can I believe this?”

Instructor credibility, student voices, safety and risk-management expertise, alumni outcomes, and real field stories.

04
Act

“What is my next step?”

Clear CTAs, course availability, simplified pathways, applications, email follow-up, and sensible retargeting.

05
Learn

“What did behavior tell us?”

GA4, Looker Studio, funnel reporting, campaign analysis, testing, and budget shifts based on evidence.

Expeditions & Semesters

Lead with transformation, challenge, leadership, community, and the confidence that comes from real responsibility.

Identity + Outcome

Wilderness Medicine

Lead with field credibility, trusted instruction, professional relevance, and the confidence to respond when the environment gets uncertain.

Trust + Utility

Custom Education

Connect the NOLS learning model to organizational outcomes: leadership, judgment, resilience, communication, and team performance.

Outcome + Evidence

Alumni Trips

Use belonging and continuity. NOLS is not only an experience someone remembers. It can remain part of how they choose to live and learn.

Belonging + Return

Advancement

Make impact tangible through people, access, wilderness, education, and the downstream leadership NOLS helps create.

Impact + Proof

The shared brand

Different audiences, one NOLS promise: meaningful challenge, expert education, and leadership learned through experience.

Consistency + Relevance
First six months

Listen first. Build the baseline. Then create momentum.

The first six months should produce both results and infrastructure: better campaigns now, plus a stronger operating system for every campaign that follows.

30
Days 1–30 · Learn the terrain

Understand NOLS from the inside out.

  • Complete or begin the NOLS course experience and document the moments that make the value real.
  • Meet stakeholders across Expeditions, Wilderness Medicine, Custom Education, Alumni Trips, Advancement, Admissions, and digital.
  • Audit agency performance, campaign structure, budget allocation, creative, reporting, and current testing cadence.
  • Establish the baseline funnel by product line: traffic, engagement, inquiry, application, completion, and enrollment.
→ Outcome: a shared view of where enrollment is working, where it leaks, and where marketing can create the fastest meaningful gains.
60
Days 31–60 · Build the system

Turn data into an operating rhythm.

  • Create a practical Looker Studio view that connects campaign activity to movement through the enrollment journey.
  • Define priority audiences and decision drivers for each major product line.
  • Build an integrated campaign calendar tied to enrollment needs, seasonality, available inventory, and organizational priorities.
  • Launch quick UX, SEO, message, and follow-up improvements where the data already points to friction.
→ Outcome: marketing, agency partners, and internal stakeholders are working from the same scorecard and the same priorities.
90
Days 61–90 · Test in market

Create a repeatable campaign laboratory.

  • Run focused enrollment campaigns for two or three priority offerings with clear audience, message, offer, and conversion hypotheses.
  • Test landing-page structure, calls to action, proof points, creative, email sequences, and audience segments.
  • Turn student and instructor stories into modular campaign assets instead of one-off content.
  • Hold concise weekly optimization reviews with the agency: what moved, why, what changes next.
→ Outcome: NOLS begins building its own evidence about what messages and experiences move different audiences toward enrollment.
180
Months 4–6 · Scale what works

Make learning cumulative.

  • Shift budget and effort toward the strongest audience, channel, message, and landing-page combinations.
  • Create lightweight campaign playbooks by product line so every launch starts smarter than the last.
  • Expand the content system around real student outcomes, instructor expertise, wilderness learning, and leadership development.
  • Present a six-month readout: performance, insights, tests won and lost, and the next set of growth priorities.
→ Outcome: a measurable marketing engine that gets better through use, not simply busier through volume.
Measurement

Report what helps us make a better decision.

A dashboard should not be a museum of metrics. It should make the next decision easier: where to invest, what to fix, what to test, and which audience is moving.

Brand storytelling

Show the transformation. Do not just describe the course.

NOLS has a structural advantage most brands would envy: real people doing difficult things in consequential environments. The content system should preserve that authenticity and make it useful throughout the enrollment journey.

Story framework

Real student.
Real decision.
Real change.

One field story should become a family of useful campaign assets, not disappear after one post.

01

The decision before the course

What was the student uncertain about? What almost kept them from choosing NOLS? That is often the exact question another prospective student has now.

02

The moment in the field

Capture the specific point where challenge became learning: a decision, leadership moment, rescue scenario, difficult route, or team conflict.

03

The outcome after NOLS

Make the transfer visible. How did judgment, confidence, skill, leadership, or community show up after the course ended?

04

One story, many jobs

Use the same authentic core across a paid creative, landing page, email, social cut, blog feature, retargeting proof point, and admissions follow-up.

Agency + internal collaboration

Clear ownership. Fast learning. No vanity reporting.

The external agency should extend NOLS’ capabilities, not become the owner of NOLS’ strategy. Internally, stakeholders should be contributors to one marketing system rather than customers of separate marketing requests.

NOLS owns the “why.”

Audience priorities, enrollment goals, product knowledge, brand truth, customer insight, budget choices, and the final definition of success stay close to the organization.

StrategyAudiencePrioritiesBrandDecision-making

The agency accelerates the “how.”

Media execution, platform expertise, creative iteration, channel optimization, and technical support become more valuable when the brief, scorecard, and testing agenda are explicit.

Why this approach fits me

Outdoor credibility + marketing discipline.

I have spent my career translating meaningful experiences and expert knowledge into action. My background combines hands-on outdoor leadership with integrated marketing, audience growth, SEO, CRM, analytics, storytelling, partnerships, and organizational leadership.

I would approach this as a working marketing manager: close enough to campaigns to understand what is really happening, analytical enough to know what the data is saying, and collaborative enough to move the work across teams.

The opportunity

Make the path to NOLS feel as intentional as the experience itself.

The goal is not louder marketing. It is a clearer connection between the person searching for what comes next and the experience that can change what they believe they are capable of.
